  The 72-hour Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course allows you to be the change you want to see in the world. Based on Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Designers’ Manual, it provides skills and solid knowledge in Permaculture design as a science that can create abundant ecosystems sustainably in the backyard, a small farm or on a larger broad acre landscape.

We are offering two week courses and shorter specialized workshops roped in from the Permaculture Design Certificate

3 day Composting Intensive Course

 

Three Day Composting Intensive Certification Course in Laikipia

(in partnership with Laikipia Permaculture Centre and Master Composter Peter Ash)

When: February 16th-18th, 2017

Where: Laikipia Permaculture Centre in Laikipia

Cost: 22,500 KSH

Details:  The Master Composter Certificate is a “train-the-trainer” program providing with more extensive in depth compost techniques from International Certifies Permaculture Designer and Master Composter, Peter Ash. Peter will teach you about the latest science during this workshop from his vast expertise in the field for over 35 years! This is our SECOND Master Composting Training in Laikipia set out over five days in partnership with the Laikipia Permaculture Centre (LPC).

Learn about:

  • biology of composting, turning scrap to compost
  • the small-scale composting process
  • how to use finished compost
  • vermicomposting
  • building compost bins
  • how to design and build on-site compost systems
  • techniques for teaching others about composting


Anyone who has an interest in composting can become a Master Composter! The prerequisites are an enthusiasm for acquiring and sharing knowledge about composting and the interest and time to participate. Master Composters are valued volunteers trained to educate the public and stimulate enthusiasm for home composting which is very much needed!

When: 11th March

Where: Nurisha, Swara Plains in Athi River

Cost: 10,500 KSH

Details: This is a unique course bringing in chefs and experts from the slowfood movement, and permaulture experts who will share stories, recipes, herbal medicine and a holistic nutrition approach as well as designing small urban gardens. You will also get to see a permaculture demo site in action run by one of PRI Kenya’s founding member’s Gai Cullen. Her demo home boasts abundant gardens, food forest, herb gardens and livestock management just 50 min from JKIA!

(in partnership with Jess de Boer, part of the Urban PDC schedule )

Where:  Karen in Nairobi

Cost: 15,000 KSH

Details: This is our first ever bee keeping course with bee girl herself Jess de Boer and author of the Elephant and Bee! This course will take place in Karen as part of the six week permaculture urban course and is open to anyone to attend. You don’t want to miss this! Dates to be confirmed by January.

When: 20th – 21st May

Where:  The Arboretum in Nairobi

Cost: 15,500 KSH

Details: This will be our first ever integrated pest management and composting course roped in together at the Nairobi Arboretum. This course will focus on managing gardens, effective IPM strategies, soil biology and building, companion planting and designing efficient composting systems. There will be emphasis on practicals during this two day intensive.


Permaculture Design Certification Courses

(in partnership with Drylands Natural Resource Centre)

When: 14th – 24th March

Where:  Drylands Natural Resource Centre Makueni

Cost: 400 USD  / 40,000 Ksh

Details: Permaculture integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.

This course takes place at PRI-Kenya partner organization, Drylands Natural Resources Centre in Makueni region. The site is run by PRI-Kenya chairman Nicholas Syano who works with 400+ farmers and  DNRC have made a huge impact not only on farmers food security but also their well-being and the health of the environment. This design course also includes a special module on Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) — a simple but wonderfully effective technique for landscape regeneration which works beautifully together with permaculture and which is rapidly being recognized as an important tool for regenerating drought prone African landscapes. DNRC is an educational permaculture demonstration model in development so participants will get the opportunity to see this in action.

When: April – May

Where:  Drylands Natural Resource Centre Makueni

Cost: 50,000 KSH

Details: This our second ever Urban PDC set out in Nairobi over six weekends. Ideal for folks who can’t take time off for our consecutive two week courses. Our first course was a total success and participants asked for more! The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of Permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and strategies supporting permaculture solutions in an urban set up as well. The course will take place at many different locations, bringing in many different experts on as well within Nairobi making this a very one of a kind course!

Details: You will learn the complete process of designing and implementing a permaculture plan. Learn the concepts of sustainable living and improved self-reliance  and attain hands on experience of design and implementation. Participants will learn how to develop sustainable systems  and concepts of natural building co facilitated by  International  Natural builder and permaculture enthusiast, Cesar, which can be applied to all aspects of life through the observation and replication of natural patterning.  Permaculture is an integrated design strategy incorporating food forests and jungle gardens, natural building, alternative economics, aquaculture and mapping to create a sustainable human habitat. You will be presented with an innovative approach through modeling the structure of Permaculture directly in the environment. 

This PDC will be held at the Laikipia Permaculture Centre (LPC), a truly unique setting and is one of PRI Kenya’s  key partner projects run by one of PRI Kenya’s founding members, Joseph Lentunyoi. LPC is located in a dry-lands area and is also the focal point for the Laikipia Permaculture Project (LPP), working with Maasai  women’s groups to create food security and sustainable livelihoods through permaculture. You will be learning practical aspects of permaculture both at  the LPC farm and working directly with the women’s groups, helping them develop their permaculture farms.

(in partnership with University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, USA)

When: June/July – dates to be confirmed by February

Cost: 50,000 KSH

Details: An an innovative PDC program, following the PRI ‘Master Plan’ template, University students from University of Wisconsin Stevens Point (UWSP) learn permaculture alongside Kenyan students, project managers and small-holder farmers at different community development projects integrating permaculture into their work. The course, which is spread out over three weeks to allow lots of time for practical implementation activities, gives ample opportunity for students to learn about implementing permaculture in a community development context, whilst providing real and long-lasting change for the orphan children and small holder farmers who are beneficiaries of these projects.

The course is run by John Sheffy who teaches at University of Wisconsin. John has worked as a Sustainable Agriculture Programme manager in both Kenya and Mexico and has ample experience of both sustainable agriculture and community based forest management in a development context. John started teaching permaculture with PRI-Kenya in Kenya and has been very inspired by teaching with Warren Brush. Together with John’s partner, Holly Petrillo, professor of forestry, entomology and pathology at UWSP, they are offering you an unforgettable PDC integrated with their students from UWSP so you really don’t want to miss out!

Cost: 400 USD  / 40,000 Ksh

Details: This will be be our FIRST EVER integrated course set out at PRI Kenya’s partner organizations around Western Kenya. This course will take you through the many focal projects we are working with and see the different and unique developments. The course will be taught by showing students to focus on local resources and their local community, and to have well thought out design practices to create abundant sustainably.
